What this adventure is about

The Gorge Trail climbs through the narrow gorge at Watkins Glen State Park, passing waterfalls, sculpted rock, stone bridges, tunnels, and wet staircases. It is short enough for newer hikers but far more memorable than a flat nature walk.

Highlights

  • 19 waterfalls in the park gorge
  • Cavern Cascade and Rainbow Falls
  • Historic stone stairways and bridges
  • Easy to pair with a Finger Lakes weekend
Route styleGorge traverse with rim-trail return options
Group styleApproachable, but expect many stone steps

What you’ll carry

  • Shoes with good wet-surface traction
  • Light rain layer
  • Water
  • Small daypack
  • Camera or phone protection from spray

What sleeping outside looks like

No camping is required. Watkins Glen State Park also has seasonal camping if the hike is part of a longer trip.

Fuel the day, then the next one

This is a short outing, but carry drinking water. The creek and falls are scenery, not a drinking-water plan.

Prepare for the actual demands

General walking fitness is enough for most visitors. Stairs are the main demand, so a little stair practice makes the day more comfortable.

The practical stuff

The Gorge Trail is seasonal and access can change because of construction, weather, or high water. Check New York State Parks for the current opening and entrance information.

Plans change when conditions do

Stone steps can be slick from spray and rain. Stay on the established trail, respect closures, and do not enter the gorge when the trail is closed.
