What this adventure is about

The Mist Trail follows the Merced River before climbing a steep granite staircase beside Vernal Fall. It is one of Yosemite’s most famous short hikes and a useful step up from beginner trails because footing, crowds, and sustained climbing all matter.

Route styleOut-and-back with alternate return options

  • Small daypack

What sleeping outside looks like

No camping is required for this version of the hike.

Fuel the day, then the next one

Carry your own water and snacks. Do not rely on river water without proper treatment.

Prepare for the actual demands

Practice sustained stairs or hill climbing and be comfortable descending steep steps after your legs are tired.

The practical stuff

Yosemite trail access, shuttles, parking, reservations, and closures can change. Verify current National Park Service information before travel.

Plans change when conditions do

The staircase can be very wet and slippery, especially during high flow. Stay behind barriers and away from river edges; swift water is a serious hazard.
