THE EXPERIENCE
What this adventure is about
The route climbs the West Rim Trail to Scout Lookout before entering the famous final half-mile chain section along a narrow sandstone ridge. The views are extraordinary, but the exposure and two-way traffic make calm decision-making more important than speed.
Highlights
- Walter’s Wiggles
- Scout Lookout
- The chain-assisted ridge
- Iconic Zion Canyon views
GEAR
What you’ll carry
- Water
- High-traction footwear
- Sun protection
- Weather layer
- Small daypack
- Headlamp if timing could run late
CAMPING
What sleeping outside looks like
No camping is required for this day hike.
FOOD & WATER
Fuel the day, then the next one
Carry plenty of water and food for the climb. Desert heat can make a relatively short route far more demanding.
TRAINING
Prepare for the actual demands
Prepare with steep hill or stair work and enough general endurance for several hours of climbing and descending. Comfort with heights cannot be trained away at the trailhead.
LOGISTICS
The practical stuff
A permit is required to hike beyond Scout Lookout onto the Angels Landing chain section. Zion uses seasonal and day-before permit lotteries; check current NPS rules and shuttle operations.
SAFETY
Plans change when conditions do
The final ridge is narrow with major drop-offs. Do not continue in rain, ice, thunderstorms, darkness, or if exposure makes you uncomfortable. Turning around at Scout Lookout is a completely legitimate hike.
