CAMPING
What sleeping outside looks like
A wilderness permit is required for overnight camping. Complete Wonderland hikers use designated camps, and the campsite itinerary is central to the permit.
FOOD & WATER
Fuel the day, then the next one
Food caching is possible at several locations, which can reduce pack weight. Water is common but must be treated; river and bridge conditions can change.
TRAINING
Prepare for the actual demands
This requires a serious backpacking base: loaded-pack climbs, long descents, back-to-back days, and enough durability to repeat the work for more than a week.
LOGISTICS
The practical stuff
Permit competition is significant. Camp sequencing, trailhead choice, food caches, transportation, road access, and current backcountry conditions should be planned as one system.
SAFETY
Plans change when conditions do
Snow, glacial river crossings, bridge damage, wildfire, and rapidly changing weather can alter the route. Mount Rainier National Park publishes current trail and camp conditions that must be checked before departure.
