What sleeping outside looks like

The classic experience is built around mountain rifugi. Reservations are a major part of planning, especially in July and August.

Fuel the day, then the next one

Rifugi provide meals and drinks, but each stage still needs snacks and water. Availability and opening dates vary by hut and season.

Prepare for the actual demands

Build repeated 5–7 hour mountain days, steep climbing and descending, and confidence on rocky high trails. Pack light, but train with the weight you will actually carry.

The practical stuff

The full historic route is commonly described as 12 stages from Lago di Braies to Belluno. Some modern itineraries use variants or finish before the most technical southern sections.

Plans change when conditions do

Later stages and variants can include exposed or equipped sections. The exact itinerary should match technical experience, weather, refuge openings, and current trail conditions rather than blindly following a single GPX line.
