THE EXPERIENCE
What this adventure is about
This is one of the most wonderfully absurd pieces of New York hiking infrastructure: Metro-North has an Appalachian Trail station where the railroad crosses the A.T. near Pawling. The classic Great Swamp and Corbin Hill hike is 2.8 miles, crossing wetland boardwalks and the Swamp River before a gradual climb into open meadow.
Highlights
- A train stop named Appalachian Trail
- Great Swamp wetlands and boardwalks
- A real white-blaze A.T. experience
- Perfect bridge between local day hikes and future section hiking
GEAR
What you’ll carry
- Trail shoes
- Water
- Snack
- Bug protection in warm months
- Weather layer
- A.T. map saved offline
CAMPING
What sleeping outside looks like
No camping is needed for this version. It is a day-hike introduction to the A.T.
FOOD & WATER
Fuel the day, then the next one
Carry your own drinking water. Wetlands surrounding the trail are not a substitute for potable water.
TRAINING
Prepare for the actual demands
Normal walking fitness is sufficient. Use this hike to practice pacing, trail awareness, and reading white A.T. blazes.
LOGISTICS
The practical stuff
Metro-North’s Harlem Line serves the Appalachian Trail station on weekends, directly beside the Trail near Route 22. Service is limited compared with ordinary commuter stations, so this is one hike where checking TrainTime before leaving home is part of the hike.
SAFETY
Plans change when conditions do
Boardwalks and wet sections can be slick. Ticks are common in the region, and the train schedule is unforgiving enough to become its own minor wilderness hazard if ignored.
