What this adventure is about

Tuxedo is one of the most useful car-free gateways into Harriman State Park. From town, hikers can reach the Ramapo-Dunderberg trail network and build a roughly six-mile loop over rocky Harriman terrain to Claudius Smith’s Den and nearby viewpoints.

Highlights

  • Harriman directly from a train town
  • Claudius Smith’s Den
  • Rocky ridges and forest
  • A strong rehearsal for carrying an overnight pack here later

  • Offline NY-NJ Trail Conference map
  • Basic first aid

What sleeping outside looks like

No camping on this version, but the same Tuxedo trail system becomes the launch point for the overnight adventure in this library.

Fuel the day, then the next one

Carry enough water for the full hike. Harriman water sources should not be treated as reliably available or safe without treatment.

Prepare for the actual demands

Comfort with 5–7 rocky miles and sustained hills is useful. Practice descending on uneven ground, not just climbing.

The practical stuff

Tuxedo is served by the Port Jervis Line, operated by NJ Transit under contract with Metro-North. From New York Penn, this typically involves a transfer at Secaucus. The trail network begins within walking distance of the station. Check the current weekend schedule carefully because service is much less frequent than subway service.

Plans change when conditions do

Harriman has a dense network of intersecting blazed trails, which makes navigation more important than the mileage suggests. Download a current map, expect weak cell service, and check NY State Parks alerts and closures.
