MULTI-DAY / APPALACHIAN TRAIL NEW YORK

Appalachian Trail: Metro-North Station to Manitou

A roughly 40-mile, train-connected New York Appalachian Trail section from the Harlem Valley to the Hudson — a legitimate multi-day backpacking objective that starts and ends without a car.

What this adventure is about

This is the local flagship progression trip: step off Metro-North at the Appalachian Trail station near Pawling and follow the white blazes south through the Harlem Valley, Fahnestock and Hudson Highlands terrain toward the Hudson River and Manitou. Route services list the section at roughly 40 miles, making it substantial enough to teach true multi-day rhythm while still being anchored by rail access at both ends.

Highlights

  • Start at a railroad platform literally on the Appalachian Trail
  • Multiple days of New York A.T. terrain
  • Hudson Highlands and Bear Mountain Bridge approach
  • Finish near limited-service Manitou station
  • A natural stepping stone toward longer section hikes and routes like the Tour du Mont Blanc
Route stylePoint-to-point southbound A.T. section from the Appalachian Trail station toward Manitou
Group styleAdvanced local backpacking; sustained mileage, full packs, navigation, and transit timing

What sleeping outside looks like

Camping rules vary by land manager along New York’s A.T., and designated shelters/sites are important in this region. Plan each night from a current Appalachian Trail Conservancy map/guide and verify land-manager rules rather than assuming dispersed camping is legal everywhere.

Fuel the day, then the next one

Plan water source by source and carry enough capacity for dry stretches. Water availability can change seasonally. Food should support multiple long hiking days without depending on a convenient mid-route resupply.

Prepare for the actual demands

Build to back-to-back hiking days before attempting the section. Progress toward 10–15 miles per day with a loaded pack, practice foot care, and complete at least one overnight shakedown first.

The practical stuff

Start via Metro-North Harlem Line at the Appalachian Trail station, which has direct weekend service. The Manitou endpoint on the Hudson Line has limited service and requires a connection walk from the A.T. This itinerary only works cleanly when the exact current train schedule, campsites, mileage, and trail conditions are planned together.

Plans change when conditions do

This is not an “easy because it is near New York City” trip. New York A.T. terrain is rocky, water and shelters can be spaced widely, camping is regulated, and weather changes the daily load. Carry current maps, know your exit options, and verify ATC trail alerts immediately before departure.
