THE EXPERIENCE
What this adventure is about
Anthony’s Nose rises above the east end of the Bear Mountain Bridge and gives one of the classic Hudson Highlands views. The Appalachian Mountain Club notes a public-transit option from Metro-North’s Manitou station, with roughly a 1.5-mile walk to the Appalachian Trail before the climb.
Highlights
- Anthony’s Nose overlook
- Bear Mountain Bridge below
- Appalachian Trail mileage
- A less obvious Metro-North trail gateway
GEAR
What you’ll carry
- Trail shoes or boots
- 1.5–2 L water
- Food
- Weather layer
- Offline map
- Headlamp if train timing could push the day late
CAMPING
What sleeping outside looks like
No camping. This is a day hike tied closely to train timing.
FOOD & WATER
Fuel the day, then the next one
Carry everything you need. Do not rely on a convenient store or water source between the station and viewpoint.
TRAINING
Prepare for the actual demands
Hill and stair work will make the steep climb much more pleasant. Be comfortable with several hours on feet and rocky descent.
LOGISTICS
The practical stuff
Metro-North Hudson Line service to Manitou is limited, especially compared with Cold Spring or Beacon. The station connection adds road walking before reaching the A.T. Verify the exact train schedule in TrainTime before committing to this itinerary.
SAFETY
Plans change when conditions do
The climb is steep and rocky, and the overlook has real exposure. The station connection includes road walking. Wet rock, ice, fading daylight, and a missed limited-service train can turn a simple day into unnecessary drama.
