THE EXPERIENCE
What this adventure is about
New York State Parks recommends this 4.6-mile short loop as a steep hike with multiple viewpoints. It climbs the Washburn Trail, traverses the Undercliff Trail, then descends past the Cornish Estate. For NYC hikers, it is one of the best first real mountain days that still begins with Metro-North and coffee instead of a rental car.
Highlights
- Hudson River viewpoints
- Steep but manageable mountain climbing
- Cornish Estate Ruins on the descent
- Walkable from Cold Spring’s Metro-North station
GEAR
What you’ll carry
- Trail shoes or hiking boots
- 1.5–2 L water
- Lunch or substantial snacks
- Weather layer
- Basic first aid/blister care
- Offline trail map
CAMPING
What sleeping outside looks like
No camping. This is a concentrated mountain day that returns to Cold Spring.
FOOD & WATER
Fuel the day, then the next one
Carry the water and food you need for the full loop. Cold Spring is useful before and after the hike, but not while you are climbing.
TRAINING
Prepare for the actual demands
Be comfortable walking 4–6 miles and add stairs or hill repeats for several weeks. The climb is the point, so training only on flat sidewalks is a charming but flawed plan.
LOGISTICS
The practical stuff
Metro-North Hudson Line to Cold Spring, then walk north to the Washburn trailhead near Little Stony Point. The walking connector adds distance beyond the official 4.6-mile loop. Check current Hudson Highlands closures and train schedules.
SAFETY
Plans change when conditions do
Rock can be slick when wet or icy. Summer heat, crowds, and winter traction all change the experience. Stay on the signed route and do not assume phone service will solve navigation mistakes.
