THE EXPERIENCE
What this adventure is about
Starting in the Bear Lake area, the trail passes Nymph Lake and Dream Lake before reaching Emerald Lake in a high alpine basin. The mileage is manageable, but the starting elevation is already high enough that visitors from sea level will notice it.

CAMPING
What sleeping outside looks like
No camping is required. This is designed as a day hike from the Bear Lake corridor.
FOOD & WATER
Fuel the day, then the next one
Carry your own drinking water and a snack. Altitude and dry air can make hydration needs feel different than at home.
TRAINING
Prepare for the actual demands
Regular walking and modest hill work are sufficient for most fit beginners. The biggest wildcard is how your body responds to elevation.
LOGISTICS
The practical stuff
Bear Lake is one of the busiest areas in Rocky Mountain National Park. Shuttle, parking, entrance, and timed-entry rules can change by season and year.
SAFETY
Plans change when conditions do
Weather changes quickly in the mountains. Snow and ice can persist well beyond winter, and altitude can affect visitors even on a short hike.
