CAMPING
What sleeping outside looks like
Overnight camping is controlled by permit zones in the Maroon Bells–Snowmass Wilderness. Your nightly zone plan is part of obtaining the correct permit.
FOOD & WATER
Fuel the day, then the next one
Carry the full food load for the trip and treat backcountry water. High altitude, sun, and repeated passes increase both hydration and calorie demands.
TRAINING
Prepare for the actual demands
Prior backpacking experience is strongly recommended. Build loaded-pack hiking, long climbs, 3,000+ foot days, and back-to-back mountain efforts.
LOGISTICS
The practical stuff
Overnight permits are required, and access from the Maroon Scenic Area can also involve parking or bus reservations. Permit zones and transportation should be planned together.
SAFETY
Plans change when conditions do
Four high passes mean exposure to altitude, thunderstorms, snow, cold nights, and rapidly changing conditions. Early starts and conservative weather decisions are part of the trip, not optional extras.
