THE EXPERIENCE
What this adventure is about
This is exactly the kind of first overnight Migrate Adventures should make possible for a New Yorker without a car. New York State Parks lists Dutch Doctor Shelter as a public-transportation option from Tuxedo Train Station, roughly five trail miles from the station depending on the chosen connection. The trip is long enough to teach backpacking without making evacuation logistics ridiculous.

CAMPING
What sleeping outside looks like
Harriman trail shelters are first-come, first-served. Current NY State Parks guidance allows tent camping only near designated shelter areas when shelters are occupied, with specific distance and fire rules. Bring your own shelter even if you hope to sleep in the lean-to.
FOOD & WATER
Fuel the day, then the next one
Carry enough water to handle unreliable sources and bring a treatment method for any backcountry water you use. Keep the first overnight menu simple so dinner is not an audition for wilderness television.
TRAINING
Prepare for the actual demands
Build to a comfortable 5–7 mile hike, then repeat with a progressively heavier pack. Practice setting up your shelter, using your stove, treating water, and packing everything before the trip.
LOGISTICS
The practical stuff
Use the Port Jervis Line to Tuxedo, usually via Secaucus from New York Penn. NY State Parks specifically identifies Tuxedo Train Station as the public-transportation access for Dutch Doctor Shelter. Weekend train frequency is limited, so the return train is part of the itinerary, not a vague future concern.
SAFETY
Plans change when conditions do
This is bear habitat. Follow current food-storage rules, carry a map, and do not count on reliable water or cell service. Camping regulations, fire restrictions, road closures, and shelter conditions can change and must be checked before departure.
