CAMPING
What sleeping outside looks like
Most hikers use mountain huts or designated campsites. Confirmed hut or campsite bookings are expected before starting the trek.
FOOD & WATER
Fuel the day, then the next one
Plan food by stage and carry water between reliable sources. Water strategy and treatment depend on the itinerary and current conditions.
TRAINING
Prepare for the actual demands
Build to consecutive 4–6 hour hiking days with a pack. Include uneven terrain, hill work, and practice recovering overnight before moving again.
LOGISTICS
The practical stuff
Highland buses, hut/campsite reservations, road openings, and weather all shape the trip. Transportation into Landmannalaugar and out of Þórsmörk should be treated as part of the route plan.
SAFETY
Plans change when conditions do
Icelandic highland weather can turn quickly, even in summer. Unbridged river crossings require judgment, and road or trail access can change with conditions.
