THE EXPERIENCE
What this adventure is about
Mount Beacon starts steep and stays honest. The trail follows the line of the historic Beacon Incline Railway to broad overlooks, then continues toward the South Beacon fire tower. Scenic Hudson notes that on a clear day the tower view can stretch from Manhattan toward Albany.

CAMPING
What sleeping outside looks like
No camping. Mount Beacon Park is a dawn-to-dusk day-use destination.
FOOD & WATER
Fuel the day, then the next one
Carry your own water; the steep climb can feel much hotter than its mileage suggests.
TRAINING
Prepare for the actual demands
Stairs, hills, or incline treadmill work are useful. Aim to be comfortable climbing continuously for 30–45 minutes without turning every switchback into negotiations.
LOGISTICS
The practical stuff
Take Metro-North’s Hudson Line to Beacon. Mount Beacon Park is in town but not directly beside the station; walk, use local transit, or take a short rideshare to the trailhead depending on the day. Verify current park alerts before hiking.
SAFETY
Plans change when conditions do
The climb is steep, and ice or wet leaves make descent more consequential. The fire tower is exposed; skip it in high winds, storms, or conditions that make metal stairs a poor life choice.
