What this adventure is about

Old Rag is famous for a long granite rock scramble that requires hands-on movement through boulders, cracks, and exposed slabs before reaching the summit. The loop continues down forest trails and fire road, making this much more than a quick scramble.

Highlights

  • Extended granite rock scramble
  • Old Rag summit views
  • A full-day physical challenge
  • One of the East Coast’s best-known hikes
Route styleStrenuous circuit with rock scramble
Group styleExperienced hikers comfortable scrambling

What you’ll carry

  • Daypack
  • 2–3 liters of water
  • High-traction footwear
  • Weather layer
  • Headlamp
  • Food for a long day
  • Basic first-aid and blister kit

What sleeping outside looks like

No camping is required for the circuit. Backcountry camping rules in the Old Rag area are restrictive and separate from this day-hike concept.

Fuel the day, then the next one

Carry a full-day food and water plan. Do not assume reliable water is available on the upper route.

Prepare for the actual demands

Be comfortable hiking 8–10 miles with substantial climbing. Add full-body strength, step-ups, and mobility because the scramble uses more than your legs.

The practical stuff

Shenandoah currently requires a separate Old Rag day-use ticket during the March–November ticket season in addition to park entry. Verify the current system before travel.

Plans change when conditions do

The National Park Service rates the circuit very strenuous. Rock scrambling, unreliable cell service, heat, ice, crowds, and long completion times all deserve planning.
